Strategic Management, Evolutionary Economics, and Complex Adaptive Systems

چکیده
This chapter sketches a strategic map of a selection of the relevant issues at the intersection of economics, psychology, sociology, and evolutionary theories applied to strategic management. It takes an evolutionary complexity perspective, based on a (manageable) selection of the relevant literature. The discussion focuses on evolutionary processes of change and their implications for strategic planning and related issues of organisation. The chapter concludes by discussing practical and research issues. INtrODUctION This chapter argues that the process of strategic management is analogous to evolution and learning processes (Alchian, 1950; Dopfer, 2001; Veblen, 1898). We argue that economic evolution based on competition, cooperation (Nash 1953; Von Neumann 1945), innovation, and tradition in organizations (Nelson & Winter, 1982; Schumpeter, 1993) is structurally comparable to evolutionary processes in biology (Goertzel, 1992; Kane, 1996; Smith & Szathmary, 1995; Standish, 2000). Therefore, an evolutionary framework can be used to integrate planning and management processes in strategy making. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-59904-962-5.ch008

Technology management - a complex adaptive systems approach
There are systems methods and evolutionary processes that can help organisations understand the innovative patterns and competitive mechanisms that influence the creation, management and exploitation of technology. This paper presents a specific model based on the evolutionary processes of variation, selection, retention and struggle, coupled with fitness landscape theory. This latter concept i...
متن کاملA review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science
We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Evolutionary Game Theory in Agent-Based Computational Systems: OPEC Oil-Producing Countries
This study suggests a new method for analysing the behavioral economics issues in the framework of game theory. In this context, bounded rational agents interact with one another in a strategic manner. Therefore, conventional economic modeling techniques are unable to explaine this kind of interactions. In this regard, evolutionary game theory and agent-based modeling are known as the most suit...
متن کاملWhat Is Resilience and How Can It Be Nurtured? A Systematic Review of Empirical Literature on Organizational Resilience
Background Recent health system shocks such as the Ebola outbreak of 2014–2016 and the global financial crisis of 2008 have generated global health interest in the concept of resilience. The concept is however not new, and has been applied to other sectors for a longer period of time. We conducted a review of empirical literature from both the health and other sectors to synthesize evidence on ...
متن کاملDynamic Modeling of Economic System in Iran
The long term goal attaining of economic system management requires the establishment of a dynamic framework to integrate multiple perspectives. This article considers the problem of economic development in macro level. As economic systems are complex adaptive systems composed of numerous numbers of components of dynamic and multidimensional nature, dynamics method is applied in this research. ...
